7 Website Mistakes That Kill Conversions: Fixes Included

Your traffic is fine — your website is leaking. Seven conversion killers we find in almost every audit of Indian business websites, each with a concrete, testable fix.

When a founder tells us "we get traffic but no enquiries/orders", the diagnosis is almost never mysterious. We audit the site and find the same seven leaks, in various combinations, on nearly every Indian business website we review. None of them require a redesign. All of them are fixable in days.

Mistake 1: A mobile page that takes forever on a real phone

The problem: the site was approved on the office Wi-Fi on a laptop. Your actual visitor is on a mid-range Android on a 4G connection that's having a bad day. Every extra second of load time sheds visitors who never see your offer at all — this is the leak that happens before design even matters.

The fix:

Mistake 2: An above-the-fold section that says nothing

The problem: "Welcome to XYZ Solutions — Empowering Your Dreams" over a stock photo of handshakes. A first-time visitor gives you a few seconds to answer three questions: what is this, is it for me, what do I do next. Vague taglines fail all three.

The fix: rewrite the hero as: what you offer + for whom + the primary action. "Modular kitchens in Pune, designed and installed in 45 days. Get a free design consultation." Boring beats clever; run the "would a stranger understand this in 5 seconds" test on someone outside your company.

Mistake 3: No proof anywhere a decision is being made

The problem: trust signals (if any) live on a separate "Testimonials" page nobody visits, while the product page and enquiry form — where doubt actually strikes — are bare.

The fix: place proof at the point of decision:

Mistake 4: Forms that interrogate instead of invite

The problem: an enquiry form with nine required fields — company, designation, city, budget, "how did you hear about us" — before the visitor has received any value. Every field is a toll gate, and each one loses a percentage of willing leads.

The fix: ask for the minimum needed to respond: name, phone, and one context field. You can qualify on the call — that's what the call is for. For Indian audiences, add a WhatsApp option next to the form; a large share of visitors who would never fill a form will happily send a WhatsApp message. And confirm what happens next ("we'll call within 2 working hours") — silence after submission is where trust dies.

Mistake 5: Five CTAs competing, or none visible

The problem: a page where "Learn More", "Download Brochure", "Subscribe", "Contact Us" and "Get Quote" all shout equally — or the opposite, where the visitor finishes the page and finds nothing to click.

The fix: one primary action per page, visually dominant, repeated after each major section, with a sticky button on mobile. Make the label say the outcome, not the mechanism: "Get My Free Audit" beats "Submit". Secondary actions can exist — quietly, as text links.

Mistake 6: Popup abuse

The problem: newsletter popup at 2 seconds, cookie bar, chat widget bounce, and a spin-the-wheel — all before the visitor has read a single sentence. On a phone this stack covers the entire viewport, and Google also penalises intrusive interstitials on mobile.

The fix: earn the interruption. Trigger popups on exit intent or after meaningful engagement (60%+ scroll or 30+ seconds), never on landing. One popup per session, easy to dismiss with a thumb, and offer something with actual value — a discount, a useful checklist — not "subscribe to our newsletter". If a popup's conversion rate doesn't justify its annoyance, delete it and watch overall conversion recover.

Mistake 7: Hidden pricing and vague next steps

The problem: no pricing information anywhere, no process explanation, "Contact us for a quote" as the answer to everything. Visitors don't interpret hidden pricing as premium — they interpret it as "expensive and about to waste my time", and they leave for the competitor who told them.

The fix: you don't need an exact price list. Publish starting ranges, packages, or the factors that determine cost ("projects typically range ₹X–Y depending on…"). Pair it with a clear process ("1. Free consultation → 2. Proposal in 3 days → 3. Kickoff"). Transparency filters out mismatched leads and pre-sells the matched ones — your sales calls get shorter and better simultaneously.

Run this as a 30-minute self-audit

  1. Open your site on a budget phone on mobile data. Time it honestly.
  2. Show the homepage to a stranger for 5 seconds. Ask what the business does.
  3. Find the point of decision (buy button / form). Is proof visible right there?
  4. Count required form fields. Cut everything you could ask on a call.
  5. Count competing CTAs per page. Reduce to one primary.
  6. Count what interrupts you in the first 10 seconds. Remove or delay it.
  7. Search your site for any pricing signal. Add at least ranges.
Fixing these seven leaks is almost always cheaper than the ad budget increase you were about to approve — and unlike the ads, the fix keeps paying every month after.
